Shopping Planner: Night Markets, a mermaid party and more
Night Moves: Night Markets
The night market trend has been steadily rising. Don’t believe me? The four this weekend prove my point:
Today, the Night Market St. Pete returns to the St. Pete Side Lot (2133 Second Ave. S) from 6-10 p.m. They have a huge roster of vendors, including Latin American Boutique, Blossom and Shine, work shown right, and True Vintage Eyewear. A DJ, kids fun zone and food trucks round out the festivities.
Friday, the St. Pete Indie Market hosts a pop-up in the up-and-coming Fringe District, on the 200 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N in the lots next to Coney Island and Planet Retro Records and along the sidewalk. In addition to vendors, there will be a food truck village, beer from Green Bench Brewing and tunes from DJ Holiday. 5-9 p.m.
Tampa’s in on the action too, with the Fringe Bazaar at 81Bay Brewing Co. on Friday. Hosted by Fringe Creatives, this market includes vendors and artists, including the Kate S. Cottle Pop Up Art Shop. 7-10 p.m. 4465 W Gandy Blvd., Tampa.
St. Petersburg’s Gallerie 909, which represents art from the African and Caribbean diaspora, is celebrating its third anniversary Saturday with an evening art market. Find exclusive fashions, listen to live music, try your hand at an art project and enjoy games and food. 5-9 p.m. 909 22nd St. S.
Fashionable Fins: Under the Sea Mermaid Party
Mermaids are having a moment. That’s probably what ARTpool owner Marina Williams was thinking when she decided to celebrate the gallery’s ninth anniversary with an Under the Sea Mermaid Party on Saturday. Expect a feast for the senses, with body art models, a runway show of the shop’s fashions, video art, stage performances and live music by the Vultures. They’ll have an aquatic-themed costume contest for adults and children. (Tip: Check out the Florida Shell Shop, 9901 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island). Meet the “real” mermaids splashing around in pools in the courtyard, including Sarah Weisenberger, the Jeweled Mermaid (pictured). 8 p.m. to midnight. 2030 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. artpoolrules.com.
Spring Fling: Dillard’s Spring Fashion Show
The weather is glorious, and it’s time to brighten up your wardrobe to match the season. Dillard’s at International Plaza will showcase their new spring apparel tonight with a fashion show that benefits Dress For Success. In addition to the fashion, you’ll enjoy light hors d’oeuvres, raffle prizes and a swag bag. $37.92 through eventbrite.com. 6-8 p.m. 2223 N Westshore Blvd., Tampa.
'Tis the Season? Death, Taxes and Resurrection
The folks at Dysfunctional Grace Art Co. in Ybor City have a unique outlook on life, and well, death, too. The eclectic gallery is the go-to spot for taxidermy or coffins, among many other things. To celebrate Easter coinciding with Tax Day, they're hosting an in-store event on Saturday, from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. County Argyle will have a trunk show of their vintage and handmade jewelry and artists Derek Donnelly and Oz Yost will be live painting. The gallery also has their own Easter Bunny for the kids to visit with, and you can bet he's more exciting than the mall version. 1903 E 7th Ave. (813) 842-0830.
