What to watch this weekend: 'Anne with an E' on Netflix, 'I Love Dick' on Amazon
Not the Anne you're expecting: Anne with an E
This new series may come from Breaking Bad writer Moira Walley-Beckett, but it doesn't involve Anne becoming a meth dealer. But Anne With an E does take a grittier look at Anne's troubled childhood before her coming to Green Gables. Above all, the new series is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who overcomes many challenges to find her place in the world. Like the original 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables, the series is set in Prince Edward Island in the late 1890s and follows Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty), an orphaned girl who comes to live with an aging sister and brother after stints in orphanages. Unlike the other TV and movie iterations, this seven-episode series dives more into Anne's psyche through uncomfortable flashbacks to show how she became so imaginatively outlandish. The latest version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic tale is now streaming on Netflix.
Elegant and comedic: Master of None
The hilariously real comedy series from comedian Aziz Ansari is back, this time delving deeper into the personal and professional life of Dev (Ansari). Though unlike Master of None's first season, the second includes less of a central story arc and incorporates more creatively crafted vignettes. The second season explores more upper-class existentialism with Dev traveling to Italy to find himself and the often decadent use of food. The whole series is about Dev finding himself - in love, in his career and in food preferences - and the second season beautifully and hilariously explores his wanderings through the world. Now streaming on Netflix.
Yes, that's the title: I Love Dick
If you've been wanting a show about a love triangle between three elite artists in a small Texas town that's also a commentary on capitalism, stereotypical Western culture and "the female gaze" you've come to the right place in Amazon's I Love Dick. The series is adapted from the cult novel and is set in the colorful intellectual community of Marfa, where Chris (Kathryn Hahn) and Sylvere (Griffin Dunne) move after Sylvere is offered a book fellowship. Kevin Bacon plays Dick, a elitist artist who combats their artistic styles and upends their views on love and monogamy. The series is described as "an exploration of the female gaze," "the awakening of a marriage and the deification of an artist named Dick." Sounds like a wild ride. Now streaming on Amazon.
