Rays morning after: Faria goes 6, which could help tonight

If there was a positive to take out of RHP Jacob Faria’s start Friday night it is this: He gave the Rays six innings.

That might not have seemed like much after he allowed all the runs either team would score during a five-run fifth, but it could prove big tonight when the Rays and Indians play the third game of this four-game set.

Manager Kevin Cash had to use only three relievers – Jose Alvarado, Dan Jennings and suddenly mop-up man Brad Boxberger. That leaves his bullpen a little fresher for tonight.

“For Jake to go out there and get that extra inning meant a lot simply because we didn’t have to blow through the bullpen,” Cash said. “So I was impressed with that.”

Faria was perfect through four innings. He allowed a leadoff homer to Edwin Encarnacion in the fifth then began falling behind batters, allowing hits and walks. It didn’t help that his defense was a tad shoddy.

But Faria, who had quality starts in nine of the first 11 outings of his career, placed the blame on himself. After the home run he allowed a single to Jay Bruce then struggled once he began pitching out of the stretch.

“Once I got out of the stretch, it’s on me,” Faria said. “I probably should have thrown more pitches out of the stretch in my warm ups. At that point, I hadn’t thrown out of it the first four innings. It just comes down to being on top of that. It was a little bit of coming out of my delivery a little bit and not making the adjustment quick enough to limit the damage.”

Faria dropped to 5-3 on the season and his ERA jumped from 2.81 to 3.19. After starting his career 4-0, he is 1-3 in his last his last five starts.

The five runs allowed were a career high.

Yet, he did manage to go at least six innings for the 10th time in his 12 starts.

“I appreciate it,” he said of being sent back out for the sixth after his 32-pitch fifth inning. “Such a good bullpen right now and we can go get them any time. For (Cash) to let me go out there and at least get one more, potentially two more (innings), tells me a lot (about the confidence Cash has in him) and I really appreciate it.”
