Man found shot in stomach, shooter not at scene

A Brooksville man was shot in the abdomen early Wednesday, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday. Deputies responding to a call around 2:30 a.m. about shots being fired in the 800 block of Twigg Street found Richard Hart with a gunshot wound to his stomach. Paramedics arrived and the victim was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. The victim's wound was not considered life-threatening. Hart said that he did not see who shot him and could not provide any type of description of a potential suspect, according to the sheriff's report. Deputies and detectives spoke to people who had gathered at the scene and all said they heard the gunshot but did not see the shooting.

Operation Backpack holds events for kids

Two Operation Backpack events are scheduled for Saturday:

• Operation Backpack 34606 will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Hernando County, 5404 Applegate Drive, Spring Hill. Backpacks and school supplies will be given to children first-come, first-served; children must be present to receive a backpack. Light refreshments will be served. Provided by the Spring Hill Neighborhood Project Advisory Council, in collaboration with the Advocates of 34606. Call Noreen St. Jean, (352) 345-5954.

• Operation Backpack will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 99, 208 E Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville. Free backpacks filled with school supplies will be provided to children in kindergarten through eighth grade; one backpack per child, who must be accompanied by an adult. There will be games and food. The event is co-sponsored by Jesus and Me Ministries and Love Your Neighbor. Donations are appreciated. Call (352) 593-6136 or (352) 848-0090.

SPRING HILL

Billiards tournament to benefit United Way

UPS and the United Way of Hernando County will host a billiards tournament today at Capone's Billiard Lounge, 10463 County Line Road. Registration will begin at 7:30 p.m. The entry fee is $17 per player; $15 of the registration fee will be donated to the local United Way. There will be food, drinks and door prizes.
