Hernando sees uptick in Craigslist rental scams

In light of a small string of Craigslist scams, Hernando County authorities are warning potential property renters to be wary of suspicious listings.

Although no one has gone through with a fraudulent rental agreement, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Denise Moloney says three different people have negotiated terms with a suspect who has used the site to advertise various properties owned by someone else.

The properties, listed at prices much lower than market value, are used as bait to steal money and personal information from would-be renters, she said.

Moloney said oddly low prices and incorrect information should be red flags in a listing. And if the lessee asks for money to be wired or for any personal information, renters should really be suspicious that it's fake.

"If you feel like something isn't adding up, it probably isn't," she said. "We plan to do a full investigation, but we wanted to alert people quickly to prevent anyone else from falling victim."
