Gun used by Omar Mateen a Sig Sauer MCX, not an AR-15

The weapon used by the gunman in Sunday's deadly attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando was not an AR-15 assault-style rifle as previously reported, according to the Washington Post.

The Post, citing Orlando Police officials, reported on Monday. that the weapon used was a Sig Sauer MCX.

Earlier versions of stories in the Tampa Bay Times and other outlets cited police officials who first said the weapon used by Omar Mateen to kill 49 people at the Pulse nightclub was an "AR-15-type assault rifle," according to the Post.

While the weapons use the same type of ammunition, according to the Post, the MCX uses a different gas system and cannot be classified as an AR-15.
