Wine of the week: Corvidae Wiseguy 2015 Sauvignon Blanc

In some places, folks are still wondering if winter is over. Here in Florida, we've hopscotched right into summer.

That calls for a refreshing white wine, and I found one. Corvidae Wiseguy 2015 Sauvignon Blanc, available at wine shops for about $14, is a mouthful of sunshine.

Corvidae wines are an offshoot of Owen Roe Winery, which has vineyards in Oregon and Washington. The Corvidae line takes its name from the family of birds that includes crows, ravens and magpies — all exceptionally smart, resourceful and playful, and frequently found around Pacific Northwest vineyards.

Corvidae Sauvignon Blanc is made from 100 percent sauvignon blanc grapes grown in the Yakima Valley of southern Washington, pressed and aged in stainless steel.

The result is a crisp wine that's more fruit forward than most sauvignon blancs. Its aroma suggests apples and apricots, with a flinty note.

On the tongue, the fruit includes more apple, Bosc pear, even white peach, plus citrusy hints of clementine and lime. There's little of the gooseberry tang found in many sauvignon blancs, and this wine's mouthfeel is softer as well. It does have a clean finish, with lime and stone countering all that juicy fruit.

This yummy wine would be just the thing to tote to the beach to sip while watching the sunset. It plays well with food, too: chilly oysters on the half shell, citrusy fish tacos or a big green salad with sliced peaches and goat cheese.

Baywatch is a running gag in slow motion, a thong-in-cheek TV retread swapping wholesome jiggles for dirty giggles. There are places for such humor but beaches don't have gutters.
