New in theaters July 4 weekend: 'Despicable Me 3,' 'Baby Driver,' 'The House,' 'The Beguiled'

RECOMMENDED READING

OPENING Thursday:

DESPICABLE ME 3

One of Hollywood's most successful animation franchises isn't about "me" anymore; it's about them.

Minions, those jabbering yellow baldies with their pharmaceutical physiques. Nothing but Teletubbies with better agents.

Back in 2010, Minions knew their funniest place, playing sidekicks to Steve Carell's arch-villain Gru, the title character in Despicable Me. They were only one reason Despicable Me is one of the decade's more enjoyable 'toons.

Kids found childishly kindred spirits. Universal found ways to make money off their parents. Despicable Me 2 put Minions front and center, shoving aside Gru's anti-hero charm. They got their own movie and far too many marketing deals.

Despicable Me 3 (PG) might not exist this weekend without Minions. For that and only that we thank them.

Carell does double vocal duty this time, as Gru and his long-lost twin brother, Dru. After Gru is kicked out of the Anti-Villain League he returns to arch criminality with Dru as an accomplice. Kristen Wiig returns as Gru's girlfriend, Lucy, while South Park's Trey Parker joins the series as former child star turned villain Balthazar Bratt.

A review will be published at tampabay.com/movies and on Etc, Page 2B.

THE HOUSE

Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell are good bets to deliver laughs in The House (R), playing suburbanites running a casino in a deed-restricted neighborhood. Jeremy Renner co-stars as the detective on their trail.

The casino is a desperation move by Scott and Kate after blowing their daughter's college fund. Single neighbor Frank (Jason Mantzoukas) offers his basement. Before long, Scott and Kate are acting as they believe casino owners behave, which of course is nothing like reality.

NOW PLAYING: BABY DRIVER

One of 2017's finest movie experiences is Edgar Wright's Baby Driver starring Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) as a getaway driver taking his cues from a terrific musical soundtrack. Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm co-star.

Baby Driver opened Wednesday, and I give a Grade A review: "Buckle up for Baby Driver, a movie so full throttle cool that you want to fist bump the screen. Style is the substance of Edgar Wright's inventive heist flick, a fresh, masterful syncing of music and getaway mayhem, as if La La Land's traffic jam was moving armed and dangerous. . . . Wright's ingenious approach literally turns the genre on its ear."
