Things To Do

What's new in theaters this week: 'War for the Planet of the Apes,' 'The Little Hours,' 'Wish Upon'

RECOMMENDED READING

Opening Thursday: War for the Planet of the Apes

This weekend, War for the Planet of the Apes concludes arguably one of Hollywood's finest trilogies ever.

Like its hyper-intelligent simian hero Caesar (Andy Serkis in another masterful motion-capture performance), the series evolves beyond mere expectations of summertime fun into Shakespearean spectacle. War for the Planet of the Apes is fantasy as history's mirror, from primal survival to inhumane atrocities. Stakes are raised through hindsight: These apes are us, and the worst of us is them. Matt Reeves' movie broods even better than it blows up things.

INDIE FLICKS: THE LITTLE HOURS

Aubrey Plaza and Alison Brie go medieval on viewers in The Little Hours (R), bringing modern sensibilities to a story from Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron.

Plaza and Brie play nuns tempted by a servant (Dave Franco) on the lam after the king (Nick Offerman) caught him canoodling with the queen. John C. Reilly plays a priest suggesting the servant pose as a deaf mute to hide at the convent. Think The Beguiled with a Pythonesque vibe and timelessly dirty humor.

The Little Hours opens Friday at Tampa Theatre. Read a Grade B review at tampabay.com/movies.

ALSO OPENING: WISH UPON

This week's horror movie is Wish Upon (PG-13) starring Joey King (FX's Fargo) as a teenager granted seven wishes by a magic box. Each time she uses one for selfish reasons someone dies messily. Ryan Phillippe returns from nowhere to play the girl's father. Wonder what he's wishing now.

ONE NIGHT ONLY: SHARK WEEK PREVIEW

Get a sneak peek at Shark Week on Tuesday when Discovery Channel and Fathom Events dip their toes in theaters.

The best episodes of Shark Week 2016 and a special episode of Shark Week 2017 will be broadcast to select theaters nationwide.

Tampa Bay theaters taking the plunge: Sundial 20 in St. Petersburg, Woodland Square 20 in Oldsmar, Citrus Park Stadium 20 in Tampa and Park Place Stadium 16 in Pinellas Park. Tickets are $16.

Discovery Channel's televised Shark Week events begin July 23.

In theaters: our Top 5

Current movies recommended by the Tampa Bay Times:

1 The Big Sick: A charmer redefining what romantic comedy means.

2 Baby Driver: The most fun you'll have at the movies this weekend.

3 War for the Planet of the Apes: Andy Serkis is today's Lon Chaney. Look him up, kids. Review, 10W.

4 Spider-Man: Homecoming: There's a new web slinger in town (Tom Holland) and he's geek-cool.

5 The Beguiled: Sofia Coppola offers a wicked remake of a '70s cult film.

July 21: Dunkirk; Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets; Girls Trip
