SPRING HILL

The warm comedy Over the River and Through the Woods won the most HAMI Awards at the 2016-17 Stage West Community Playhouse ceremony, taking home six of the 10 given out in the Forum division, including the coveted Favorite Show trophy.

On the Main Stage, the musical Fiddler on the Roof won five HAMI honors out of 11 in that division, though the biographical musical Always . . . Patsy Cline was voted Favorite Show. The musical Evita was a close second in number of awards, taking home four, including three of four top acting awards.

HAMI Awards are the Stage West version of the Tony Awards and are chosen by a vote of the membership. They have been given out since 1992, when shows were presented in high school auditoriums and a permanent theater was just a dream.

Back then, Fiddler on the Roof won four out of the five awards given that night, including one for Vince Vanni as Best Actor for his performance as Tevye in Fiddler. Since then, Stage West has built two theaters in its complex on Forest Oaks Boulevard and presents eight shows during its regular season, plus several specials and youth shows throughout the year.
