THROWBACK: KID AT HE(ART)
Artist collective He(Art) puts together art exhibits around Ybor, and their latest one — Kid at He(Art) — happens Saturday at the Creative Loafing event space. The show features the work of 14 artists, including Sebastian Coolidge, Daisy Robles and Emiliano Settecasi, whose work is pictured. The exhibit focuses on the ever prevalent 1990s nostalgia, which I guess is when many of these artists were kids. In reality, they were all chosen because their work reflects a '90s quality. For the show, they'll have live installations that will ultimately be backdrops for photo ops and a DJ will be bumping jams from the '90s and early 2000s. It happens from 7 p.m. to midnight, and entry is $5. 1911 N 13th St., Ybor City.
ANOTHER BEAT: HEART BEAT BOP
Tony Wong Palms' mixed media artworks in Heart Beat Bop explore the role the heart plays in human life, including love, suffering, evolution and discoveries. The exhibit opens Monday, when hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Hillsborough Community College's Ybor campus art gallery, 14th Street and Palm Avenue, Tampa. It remains on display through Sept. 28. Free.
COOL IT: HOT SUMMER SHOW III
We're deep in the dog days of summer now, and it's been well established that galleries are a great way to stay cool while enriching your mind culturally. Clayton Galleries in Tampa has opened its third installment in a series, Hot Summer Show III. View works by artists including Natty Moss Bond, Lynn Manos and Yoko Nogami, whose painting Cloud Baby is pictured. I love Nogami's work; the little girl is Toko, a recurring character in her paintings that make you want to follow her adventures. 4105 S MacDill Ave. (813) 831-8753. claytongalleries.net.
